One eyed monster... with teeth

My first thought for this sketch was to make a glassy eyed cyclopes moat monster. Instead it looks more like a mutant of another type of 'one-eyed monster.' This post should have actually came yesterday, but my scanner wasn't working at the time.  Today I had a scanner that was working, but not my own computer with Photoshop to import it to.  Goddammit.
I had hoped that I would be well into the painting process by now.  Thanks to a busted power cable, I will be away from my laptop for at least two days.  Thank goodness for smartphones.
Meanwhile, I hope to punish my sketch book more.  With a little luck, I'll have some more terrible scans to upload in the coming days.

Caped dude.

I felt like trees tonight, and evidently also a cape.  Looking back I should have googled 'bark on trees' for reference. I also tried to put a face into the base of the tree.

Mess of toes.

Hey a creature!  This guy seemed to come out of nowhere.  I was at lunch and a coworker --after being nagged on the issue -- said that ten toes on one foot might make a creature interesting.  I tried to come up with some sort of foot that could somewhat logically use ten toes, but alas, I fell short.

I ended up with a mess of webbed toes instead. Something about six toes and two heel-like things felt right.
Oh, yes.  And then I tried to throw some color on the poor bastard. And make him stand in shallow, liquid, swampy, filth.  I created him, and then I made him stand in shit.  I am a cruel god.

Something just to update

So remember the last post where I said the image was a work in progress?  Well it was, until I became distracted by painting other things.  Oh well.  I will come back to it.  What, you don't believe me?  Weren't the italics enough to convince you?  No matter,  I will show you.

Until then let's move onto todays image.  This one is also still a WIP, but I can ensure this will be completed sooner than the aforementioned.  The difference is that I am taking delight in the creepiness of this painting.  But at the end of the day, it still needs a lot of work.

The most glaring problem so far are the teeth.  I know, I know, I know.  The level of detail on the teeth doesn't match the rest of the piece.  And how about the color palette? Completely off.  I know I am going to have to rework them at some point.  So far, I have been avoiding that whole area.  I need to step up to the plate.

I have also been thinking about increasing the canvas size on the bottom right to show more of the neck line.

We'll see...

Alien Dude WIP

Again this guy shows his ugly mug around the internet.  It was suggested to me that I paint this him purple, but as I messed with it a little, it seemed like it didn't contrast greatly the warm highlight that I knew I already wanted.  So I went with a cooler blue.  Sorry.
I still need some work on the blending, and I'm trying to pin down the highlights for the rings and eyes.  Suggestions are always welcome.

Alien Dude Gets Underpainting!

This dude started as a lunchtime scribble yesterday.  It felt so fun that I carried it on to underpainting.  Next stop, this mo ' fo' is getting color!  Thinking about giving this guy some cat eyes.  What do you think?

Honesty

This study is about as done as I'm going to let it get.  Eyes hurting.  Systems powering down.  I was really trying to explore some reflective lighting on flesh tones.
The footnote in the painting is that I have --however unwilling I am to admit it--  gained some noticeable extra weight.  And by noticeable, I mean the double chin that is starting to form. Fuck.
That's the thing about doing live studies in a mirror though;  the practice does not always afford the most flattering angles.  It's not like I can pose in one of those deceptive, generic, social networking poses, where the only view of me is from the top side at a downwards angle.  Would I do it if it was physically  really convenient? Heck-friggin'-yes.  I guess I'm just that vain.
